Tree concept

My friend and former college Simon Gustafsson has made this lovely still of the tree structure. I needed a more trained eye to nail design and composition as starting point for my 3d model. It's a lesson from previous project- I need to outsource vital decisions to specialists. You might say I need to understand my weeknesses rather then to try to become the complete generalist. Would love to get back to work on this project right away but that short film got a deadline in February.

Currently working on a short film project, two effects needs to be lookdev'ed- "snow" and "northern lights". Been working on the latter, here's the animation pass. I believe I get enough niceness from this approach of simulating realistically rather then some kind of motion graphic trick solution which would be cheaper but not as fluid in it's movements.
It's interesting that I haven't seen anywhere where they succeed with this thing. Maby because all cool script writer lives too far from where the auroras is happening.

Liquid expansion overview (missing 30 frames). Feel I want to change a few things here, a clearer light coming from the energy blob outside top screen, the speed may be too fast and the liquid comes out from nowhere (which is fine but that 'nowhere' is in frame). I may also need to establish that the colour of the energy inside changes during these shots but I think I'll get them in decent shape and look at them together before making that call. So I'll probably just go to the next one.

Previz. Goo grows outwards and sips down underground, last frame is a cut through of the underground. I reckon I can throw out the overground shots fairly quickly but should move carefully to reach a nice underground look. I vision some kind of tunnel system where you see the light spread and bounce around as the goo moves down. At the same time the liquid becomes less frantic and the overexposed colours cools down to more saturated colours. Finally it comes out on the other side in and starts to build the crystal. I might need to start move the camera at some point as I think that from the camera and forward I got a free camera to emphasize all the space we got as we're now outside.

After a standstill on the liquid to solid development I decided to go back a step and work on the liquid. Maby if I get a clearer view of how this should look I will get some hints to how the crystal formation should happen.

The sample is the liquid with the floor and some sparkling particles visible in the refractions. Next up is to mix it into the blob.

Dynamically creating wires. Next step is to make them join to each other as they're getting close. Later on their trail will create meshes that is the inside of the crystal.

Update: did a quick mesh test, a lot of intersections but I feel that there is some niceness in there. Might wait implementing the join function until I see this animated and with a more continuos surface.

Took back the sculpted model into shading to see how it worked. Fairly happy with the results. Need to go back to sculpting to get a more fluid pattern then add a glass material that covers this rocky surface. Later on I will also add something glowy inside. I'll hope to paint some textures to control all this as I think manual work is needed to create the details I'm after.

You can also hint some spots of saturation, this is my take on a iridescence effect. I'll start introduce some colour here as I'm thinking of making the next phase to look like something the Hubble telescope could have captured.

Been working on a growth algorithm foe the crystals. It may be the summer heat or this is a freekin frustrating task, everythin affects everything. The picture shows how at least some of the shapes has grown without colliding with it's neighbours.

More intricate method to build up tree structured segments. One of the pictures shows how I build a line modell and then swaps out every line segment to an L-system. The Lsystem sproach was needed to certify connectivity (no hovering pieces). I hope to find a way to make holes in the branches, a nice detail to brake up the stright feel they currently have.

Currently mapping out the whole project to sketch out the "story" and to be able to break it down into subtask. To the left, photos of the first story board, last image is a test for one of the frames in the first storyboard pictures. More shots will be added to this story board but I'm trying to find what's needed to show to create a flow in the storytelling. Through this I also found that I will probably ask some of my talented friends to help out on some corners, especially some design jobs of the more important shots. What happens in the story- field expands, builds up mass and fluid behaviour, leeks through floor cracks, fluid comes out in strings and creates vein like structures, expands through organic growth behaviour, growth builds up shells, expands seemlessly ontop the surrounding topology, pullout shows a larger similar structure, expansion builds up chambers, white energy channels out to chambers spawning a new growth cycle , pullout shows larger branch structure, pullout shows larger tree structure, tree on edge of cliff, growth of branches shifts balance out over the cliff, cliff brakes of and tree disapears into the void below. Apart from developing this further, I will in the near future work on developing the look on the different environments. As a general idea I will probably change the "filter" of the video to look more clean as things gets bigger. Think - first is a microcosmos last frame is outer space.

Here's a test of an element that is to represent some kind of strong sound or collision. So far I'm still very undecided when it comes to composition. In pursuit of formulating the motions I think I can imagine I find through my tests that there's still blind spots on them and so I'm mearly collecting parts in search for a whole. I suspect I'm outside my comfort zone here as I don't have the same perspective over the creative process as I'm used to.

Made this take as an abstract thread structure that breaks and fills the void between the two parts with liquid. The thread is an lsystem that curls up on itself, copied up and mirrored and then noised That means the two sides is symetrical except some noise but I think I get away with it.
Update: both my supervisor and girlfriend complaints about clarity in my work these days, so here's a more clear version. Also, the lsystem is attached to a wire that breaks on the first frame.

Did some work on the "goodbye" project a bit. Ran intothis "materialised light" element that needed its own little side track. The idea is that colours expand from the sunset and flows over the mountains. Animation was pretty straight forward. Here's two tests for the shader I came up with. Water look. High frequency inner lights. Here's the geo I used. Next is to merge anim and shader into something that blends with the watercolour elements.

Great excerpt from Nicholas Tesla biography "Wizard, The life and Times of Nikolas Tesla" by Marc J. Seifer:

Painted some random colours onto a very wet watercolour sheet and let it smudge itself out for ~12 hours (quite amazing what those last 6h did). Captured the result and slaped it over this night sky. Next up is an animation with the elements together to get an idea of what I need to able to control, in other words, what I need to generate in CG and what can be real elements.

Did some tests with filming watercolour diffusing through paper and water. Here's a test comp with one of the resulting elements from the water test, comped ontop of the horizon picture.

The vibration is from me adding more spots in the water and the noise is due to little light exposure. I'll correct this for next test.

Also tested some colourful CG curves against this, these will be synched to an instrument in the music, the previously mentioned resonance patterns will be another layer. Later this week I'm also planning to shoot some close ups video footage of watercolour spreading through wet paper. My hope is that this will work together with the colourful shapes. After some inspiration from the cool hubble sky map I want to create the effect of something majestic and slow. Micro worlds, in this case watercolour diffussion, offen mimics macro behaviour better then our inbetween scale.

Bumped into this picture at the vvvv homepage. Apperently it's created from "cymatic" patterns, meaning overlapping waves creating resonance. With more complex setups this can the mimic the complex behaviours that we usually only contribute to living things. I think this might be a good startpoint for the aurora-borealis-like effect I might do for a audio visualisation project. The idea would be to fade in/out new waves to the mix for every new tone in the music.

Here's a video for a simple setup with three waves with their centerpoint animated. The first still to the left is one of the frames with some random distortion and colours applied to it. The second is when removing one of the waves. As there is nothing in theory that stop these from becoming 3d objects I might get into that at some point.

Schizophrenia sequel

I started to sense a picture I wanted to realise but realised that I've basicaly done it allready, around 8 years ago. It was done when I was learning 3d and named to the half embarrising "Schizophrenia", but whatta hell, if you don't stick with your past what's the point of moving. Instead I figured that now would be a good time to remake it with updated ideas, tools and skills. So here's the first draft of it together with the original(top). Next step is to add some effectul blend between the two faces. I also need to improve the fleshy feeling at far right as I want the picture to transcend from clean computer geometric abstraction to realistic naturalism. I'll also hope to experiment some with 3d elements to enhance the composition. Regarding the original it's kinda funny to see the classical beginner mistakes in anatomy like enlarged eyes and scaled down upper skull. Here's a small treat for reading this post.

Concept for car industry bail out. While I did this I came to think of how everything has played out so extremely well from a environmentalist point of view. At least the chronological order of events. The line fascism, war, climate change awareness, credit crisis and peak oil is perfect when argument for the need of systematical change. The false pretext and disastorous outcome of the Iraq war has made war look less like a profitable idea for imperialistic countries. Both MoD/Pentagon, the media (WMD's?) and the liberal elite is still in disgrace but shows hopeful signs of clensing (at least weakening). Meanwhile the environmental awareness has striken so hard that a majority of Europeans is ready to make change to their lifestyle in favor of climate friendly political reform. On the other hand the political efforts for a meaningful climate bill now stand as futile against the response to the credit crunch, clearly drawing our rulers priorities. The same thing should be said about civil society, people allready takes their frustration to the street. A sad truth for us environmentalists; just imagine how far away we were to provoke meaningful change. Though people generally had more hardlined and realistic views then both their intellectual as political leaders we barely managed with getting some shoppers to the organic shelf and even that is lost in the credit crunch. This said, the recession will breed a culture independent of growth based economy, from union mobilisation to low-cunsuming lifestyle. Possibly making another world seem possible but also less scary.
Now imagine a best case scenario for the governmental spending spree, it creates a few jobs, avoid depression-like figures and people even start to talk about the next growth cycle. And then strikes peak oil. The old system was given an extra chance, hardly standing on it's own legs it takes just a few steps before falling again. In the word of Milton Friedman "when you have a time of crisis what happens depends on what ideas are floating around" one can at least hope that by then these ideas has been developed in the credit crunch era (now). Maby inspired by my visit at Tate Britain's Turner rooms yesterday I wanted to get into some landscape painting. I've got some ideas on creating a very closed romantic nature scenario and mix in abstract elements with that, maby a geekier version of some of Bjork's stuff. Hence I picked the "pond" as it hold that feeling of a seperate ecological system, a world on its own.

In an effort to diversify my style I used this Norman Rockwell sample as a reference. I'm mostly interested in Rockwell's semi cartoon look and I might go back to reach for those warm colours that makes his characters so loveable. Tip, "Freedom of Speech" is what art should be in my mind.

Individualism goes again

The parallel between today's electronic hype and the Italian futuristic movement from about 100 years ago is too obvious to miss. They're both built around the love for the machine, symbols of contemporary urban life, individualistic to the core, denounces all previous culture, pushing for abstraction, driven by a vision of progress and both very middle class inventions. So when a singer perform a hundred year old piece "The Storm", made up by vocal puffs, whalings accompanied with chrashes and clonks my memory bank really get a filing problem of type "Where and when is what".

When I was born there was baby computers in the room, we have since grown up together. It's only a sympathetic gesture to embrace them but I was asked to do so. The society needed us to pick up those keyboards and there were people working on making sure we were first to do so. IMF have for decades made coffee makers and soy growers of the rest of the world while we were to take care of the (more profitable) service industry. Fraudulent loans, economical take over, lower education funding there, increase it here and declare free trade everywhere. Set the initial state and then release the dynamics. The discoveries of computers sipped out to private market, the exponential growth started to take effect and during the nighties came the last Kondratieff wave which I now surf on. I simply answered the call of my generation.

Such was also the history of other technologies, it's industrial wave was introduced as a cultural. Before the T-Ford was in everyone's home there was roads. Industry coupled with government created not just the need for Sunday picnic travel but made it the "American way". Through the futurists movement technology was a choice and not a need. It was genuine too. No one can deny the mans feelings when, over rusty black-and-white video, he screams poetry about the "speed of the machine" , culminating in a chrash in "FIFTY MILES PER HOUR!!". The cultural revolution was genuine, whether FIAT would have bought the posters from them or not.

Meanwhile socialism was fought back, peasantry was slaughtered, fascism rose and finally when Mussolini joined Germany the time for the futuristic free artistry was out. And I ask myself, how the hell did they manage to keep this "movement" going all that time. Oh yeah, they were middle class.

Did another attempt at this. Trying to both brake the somewhat boring overall look of it while also attempting to bring some depth by putting a bit of complementary yellow in the foreground, this could be light coming from the car (the camera is traveling on a road in some desert landscape). Also sharpened the details and lighting of the BG. Think I'll leave this to history now anyways.

I've got this idea for a video for the song "Goodbye" by Ulrich Schnauss. I've spent some spontaneous hours on developing the look and this little thingy is a result from that. I set out for sketching an abstract horizon that I could remake to 3d. Maby it got to real.

Filling out the background with sorrowful cool urban youngsters. Thought it be ironic that in the aftermath of our lifestyle we, the grand kids of god's murderers, will find ourselfs in a state of collective guilt, typical for christians. The contrast between "identity" and "faith" also hold some tention rendering the people malplace. Maby it's the "individuality" versus the "collective" causing this?

After my film was done I've put myself in a state of idleness. I've spent some time on a few random ideas with no deadline in mind. I think I didn't want to post anything here as that would be seen as progress when I really didn't want to "progress". I will get back on track soner or later but to not let this blogg be eaten up by some droning software from Blogger I post the two latest things I've done. The grayscale one still being WIP.
